The Upside of Downsizing

There is no doubt that in the current economic climate we will continue to hear stories of 1000s of layoffs everyday. The ripple effect of the impact of the unprecedented crisis in the banking sector on a whole range of other sectors cannot be underestimated.

However, there is ample evidence to suggest that reactive downsizing is a short-term, quick fix. In the longer term, head count reductions do not deliver value to companies. In fact, they erode the goodwill of high performing employees who often are the first ones to leave as their talents and experience are hugely attractive to competitors. Ironically, these are the very individuals that organisations need to have on board to see them through the crises! Alternatively, high performers are often not offered the redundancy packages that are sometimes used to ‘get rid’ of poor performing employees which can create cynicism and negative reactions among those who remain to pick up the pieces.

Smart organisations are those that will regard the current crisis as an opportunity to bring about transformational change with a view to building and sustaining excellence at every level in the organisation. This sounds utopian; it is arguably somewaht true bearing in mind that 70% of change efforts fail to achieve their goals and objectives. However, 30% of the companies that are able to rise to the challenge do not tinker with change - they are seriously clear about what needs to change and how the changes will be implemented.  Based on our extensive and longitudinal case study work we have developed tools and techniques to help organisations build and sustain a resilient workforce.

We will be pleased to discuss and create with you solutions that are appropriate to your organisation’s specific needs.
